Gardasil is a vaccine that can prevent cervical cancer. The 9-in-1 vaccine can prevent cervical cancer caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 (covering types 90%) and other diseases caused by HPV virus infection.
Earlier, the government included HPV vaccination in Hong Kong's childhood immunization program, which shows that vaccination is not just for adult women, but can also protect schoolchildren and men; vaccination for boys can also prevent anal cancer and sexually transmitted warts (commonly known as cauliflower).

  • Female aged nine or above
  • Vaccination is more effective for women who have not had sexual experience
  • Women who have had sexual experience can also be vaccinated

What is human papillomavirus?

Human papillomavirus (also known as HPV) is a group of viruses that includes more than 150 types, about 40 of which can infect human reproductive organs. HPV can cause precancerous lesions and cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva and anus.

What is the HPV vaccine?

Human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV vaccine, also known as cervical cancer vaccine) is a preventive vaccine that can prevent cervical cancer and other cancers and diseases caused by HPV infection. In Hong Kong, about 90% of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV-16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 virus infections. The nine-valent human papillomavirus vaccine can cover the above seven HPV genotypes.
